Below is copied my posting at Sojourners (sojo.net) about who to vote for in the 2004 elections. -----

The body of the Catholic Church in the US today seems to be totally comprised of people who adhere to a central ideology; that of anti-abortion. You hear nothing about supporting and providing for those who are already born.

The error of a central ideology caused dire consequences in the last century; between 6 and 20 million deaths. That Central Ideology? The opposition to Communism. This single minded purpose that most catholics had, allowed the fascists to rise and gain power and by the time mainstream society took the blinders off, it was too late for all those unfortunate souls.

We should consider the value and quality of life in all of its natural stages making an unborn individual as important to us as that of a born individual. The consistent life ethic requires us to eliminate poverty, care for those who are unable to care for themselves, abolish capital punishment, and require all employers to provide a living wage. These are all our catholic values and they should be remembered and maintained.

With that in mind, who can you vote for? I analyze all the issues that are important to me, I weigh each of them appropriately. Even including the democrats' continued support for choice, my analysis tells me it is more catholic to vote democrat in this election. Hopefully many more catholics will agree and we will get someone who cares about the others in our society and around the world, not just the wealthy.

Also, the birth control argument is a cop out. Natural Family Planning is safe, effective, 99% accurate and easy to do. For most couples, there are only 3-4 days of abstinence required each month. I say instead of teaching about contraception in schools, make teaching the Thermo-symptom method mandatory. It would certainly fulfill many of the science standards required nationally.
